Extend The Lifespan of Your Commercial Coffee Machine

Specialty coffee equipment deserves and requires special attention. When purchasing quality coffee machines, their lifespan is entirely dependent on the quality of care they receive. This includes everything from the water quality going into your machine to taking steps to clean and maintain it regularly. As long time coffee professionals, we know what goes into caring for a coffee machine and what it takes to maintain them for many years. We help our clients care for their coffee grinders, coffee machines, and other equipment to ensure their lifespan isn’t cut short. We provide a variety of tips and services to make the process as simple as possible.

Commercial Coffee Machine Lifespan

Commercial Coffee Machines are quality machines that can last many years if properly maintained. The machine lifespan is impacted by simple things like how regular maintenance is provided, the quality of the water being used, the cleaning methods, and more. By utilizing specific cleaning methods on your coffee machines you can extend its lifespan and ensure your team is brewing a quality cup of coffee every time. Taking care of a machine means that more rigorous maintenance is required less frequently, parts will hold up longer, and the machine will continue working properly for years. Continue reading for some basic tips on how a commercial business can keep their high quality coffee machines functioning every day.

Espresso Machine Care Guide & Tips

Backflushing Group Heads

When coffee is roasted, ground, and used for espresso brewing it releases natural oils which can stick to coffee machines and clog up machine parts that need steady flow for water. Backflushing the group heads of your espresso machines will help break down the oil residue that is often left behind by coffee and slowly builds up over time. An espresso machine cleaning powder can regularly and easily be used to flush all of these oils out. Over time these oils can become rancid and infuse your coffee with a bitter quality. Cleaning these coffee brewing machines daily ensures the longevity of your machine and the quality of your coffee.

Scale Buildup Inside Espresso Machines

Scale Buildup occurs slowly over a long period of time and is a result of minerals from the water attaching to the surface of your pipes and boiler. As water heats inside of your machine the minerals in the water separate and can be left behind causing the buildup to begin inside your espresso machine. Espresso machines on untreated water will eventually need descaling no matter how much regular maintenance and cleaning you do. Some of the initial signs that it is time for a descaling service are an unusually long brew time, unusual noise during brewing, or issues with water flow. Ohio Specialty Coffee Equipment offers descaling as a part of our coffee machine service, but it can be labor intensive and expensive. Contact us to learn how to treat water to prevent scale build-up, which can extend the lifespan of coffee equipment.

Cleaning Steam Wands

Because they are constantly introduced to milk the steam wands on a machine require daily cleaning. The water in the milk evaporates quickly due to the high temperatures and easily leaves behind a milk residue. While it is highly encouraged to wipe the steam wand and purge the wand of any potential leftover milk after each use, the residue will still build up over the course of a day of making coffee drinks. To properly clean the steam wands use a milk-specific liquid cleaner diluted in hot water, steam the water, and allow the steam wand to soak for a time. Remove the tips of the steam wand and scrub the inside of any residue still left, making sure to clear the holes on the tip of any blockage. Finally assemble the steam wand again and purge once more and your steam wand is clean!

Proper Maintenance of Your Machine

Proper maintenance of your coffee machines, water systems, and espresso machines means less repairs, replacement parts, and an extended lifespan. Cleaning your coffee equipment daily reduces buildup of residue and minerals which can cause larger repair issues. There are many factors to extending the life of your machine, but daily cleaning of your equipment is an essential part to caring for your commercial coffee machines. By providing daily maintenance for your coffee machines you are reducing repair time, and down time in general as the espresso machines are less likely to need regular repairs. Removing coffee grounds from a coffee grinder, purging steam wands, sticking to a regular water filter replacement schedule, backflushing machine group heads, and other regular maintenance cleaning will save you time and money over time and will help keep your coffee tasting great.
