How Steam Wands Become Clogged

Steam wands on espresso machines are a simple tool that gets used frequently, and if not taken care of can cause several issues. Steam wands push pressurized air out of their nozzle to steam milk. This only gets complicated when the person operating the coffee machine isn’t following some simple steam wand etiquette.
Steam wands become clogged when milk is left in contact with the hot metal. Any milk residue that has been left inside or outside of the steam wand will dry extremely quickly because of the high temperatures the wands reach. The residue left on the wand can cause build-up, imbue an unpleasant taste into the drink, and may even allow bacteria to grow. By utilizing better technique and care while operating the steam wands you can easily prevent this from happening.
Good Steam Wand Techniques
The first step to maintaining an espresso machine is to make sure you’re utilizing the best technique while operating it! After every use, a barista should immediately purge steam through the wand to clear any milk residue. Because the wands are very hot, water in the milk will evaporate quickly leaving a dried residue. This residue builds up over time and will need to be more thoroughly cleaned. The same problem will happen with the outside of a steam wand. Wiping both the stem and the tip of the steam wand clear of any milk residue ensures each cup of coffee will have a better milk texture and taste! Each time someone using your coffee machine skips one of these steps the buildup will become slightly worse and require more frequent deep cleaning.
Steam Wand Maintenance
Performing frequent maintenance on your espresso machine ensures it’s functioning at full capacity, and that rancid debris isn’t impacting the flavor of your coffee. Like any coffee machine the more you use it the more buildup can occur. This is especially true when you’re regularly steaming milk. Even when practicing proper steaming techniques, purging the wand, and wiping it clean after every use clogs can still form.
Utilizing cleaning products that are formulated for espresso machine maintenance will yield the best results for breaking down residue. Add your cleaning solution of choice to a milk pitcher and heat it with the steam wand for several seconds until it’s very hot. Prop up the pitcher submerging the wand as much as possible. Allow this to soak for a few minutes. The residue will break down in the solution and once you purge it the inside should be clean. Wipe everything down and you’re all done!
Cleaning the Steam Wand Tip
The tip of the steam wand may need more thorough cleaning if residue has already built up inside. More extreme buildup can occur when operators aren’t using proper technique, or when the coffee machine isn’t frequently maintained.
Remove the tip and soak it in the same cleaning solution to break down any clogging in the holes. After several minutes, scrub the tip ensuring that the holes are all completely cleared of buildup. Use a scrubbing tool that allows you to clean the inside, and if necessary use a very thin cleaning wire to remove any buildup in the holes. After reattaching the tip of the steam wand, turn on the pressure to the highest setting and allow it to purge one final time. Deep cleaning the tip of the steam wand typically won't need to be done daily but should be done at least once a week. A busy coffee shop may do more frequent maintenance to ensure consistency in their milk.
Preventing Buildup in Your Coffee Machine
Milk residue buildup may result in issues with the pressure of your steam wand. The inside of the wand can become clogged and reduce the efficiency of the pressurized steam. Holes in the tip of the steam wand may also become clogged, which will not only impact the pressure but also how your milk is steaming. A clogged steam wand can impact the texture of your aerated milk, and the rate the milk is heated. Issues with the rate of heating the milk can impact the was protein structures change resuilting in unstable milk foam. Clogged milk inside of the steam wand can also impart an unpleasant taste to the milk you’re steaming. Prevent residue buildup by taking care of your equipment. Cutting corners in your regular use and active cleaning only causes problems and makes future maintenance more difficult.
When operating an espresso machine it’s important to pay attention to all of your senses. Listen to the sounds of your steam wand, the machine’s pump, and anything out of the ordinary. Look for signs of any issues including the flow rate of water, built-up residue, or any mechanical features malfunctioning. Noticing temperature changes in different parts can also be a sign that something isn’t working correctly inside the machine.
